We decided to zoom in on the 1920's,1940's,1960's & the 1980's,not just because they are all even decades...but because we felt that the iconography of each of these decades in particular was more relatable, and our targeted audience (who evidently weren't around for many or any of these decades) would be able to make a intertextual connection with & achieve as much additional pleasure as possible.
We sourced other pieces of media (mainly films) to have as period representations from a film-makers perspective, in order to draw out the eye-catching elements which would help to lift the tone of each setting. In addition we looked into popular cultural events that took place during this time space - for example : Marilyn Monroe's death in 1962 which we good feature in newspaper form as a piece of mis en scene to add a sense of realism to the shoot.
I read the novel 'The Great Gatsby' (followed by watching the film version so I could visualise a representation of the jazz age literally) - and further researched into the 1920's, the flapper women (The flapper’s wore short skirts & had bobbed hair -symbolic of their sudden emancipation and greater equality in society) ,the petting parties, jazz music, fashion trends, technology boom, prohibition, motor cars etc.
For the 1940's I watched the film 'Hope and Glory' to have a look at the Morale boosting dance hall events (a form of war time escape).
For the 1960's I watched the film hairspray to look at the costumes & hair styles - beehives, block prints, box-shapped PVC dresses,go-go boots, mini skirts, false lashes, culottes, capri trousers, stilettos, A-line dresses etc.
Finally for the 1980's we looked at Olivia Newton John's music video 'Let's get physical' and Eric Prydz 'Call on Me'.
Here are some photographs of our plans for what kind of location we wanted to use / scene we wanted to set for each shoot. We didn't want to make every era be in a party setting A.) because this would be extremely ambitious. and B.) because we wanted to explore other elements of each era & create some evident diversity / clarity between our scenes.
(1920's = petting party)
(1940's = dance hall / street party / family dinner type setting / war's end)
(1960's = big social party / 60's style diner setting)
(Possibility of 70's disco scene to replace a more dance / bigger cast shoot for the 1960's we are currently undecided on what would look more affective)
(1980's = aerobic style dance choreography scene)
